Changi Chapel and Museum is marking the 81st anniversary of Singapore's liberation from the Japanese Occupation from 11 to 13 September 2026. The weekend is the museum's September public-programme slot, the same month it uses each year to talk about the end of internment at Changi. One scheduling catch matters if you only have Friday: the museum closes from 2pm on 11 September for Heritage in Harmony, with limited parking on the day.
Friday morning, or wait for the weekend
HeritageSG posted the 11 to 13 September commemoration with talks, performances, tours, workshops and family sessions split across Changi Chapel and Museum and Reflections at Bukit Chandu. Full session lists were still being released as of late August, so treat the weekend as a reason to go, then check the museum site the week of the event for timed talks.
If Friday is your only window, go at opening. Hours are 9.30am to 5.30pm, Tuesday to Sunday, last admission 5pm, closed Mondays except public holidays. On 11 September that window collapses at 2pm. Saturday and Sunday revert to the usual full day unless HeritageSG posts another closure.
Reflections at Bukit Chandu is in the west, not in Changi. Pairing both in one day is a cross-island trip. Most Changi visitors will get more from staying at the chapel museum and walking the replica chapel before the galleries fill.
What you are walking through
The museum reopened in May 2021 after a rebuild. It holds 114 artefacts across eight galleries that follow civilian internees and prisoners of war from the fall of Singapore through daily life in the Changi camps and on to liberation. Japan surrendered on 15 August 1945. The Liberation gallery is the one to linger in this weekend: it is built around how people felt when the camps opened, not a parade of weapons.
The outdoor chapel is a replica of St George's Church, one of the camp chapels POW labour put up during internment. Reverend Eric Cordingly started that congregation. The brass Changi Cross on the altar was made from a 45mm howitzer shell by Harry Stogden. It is a quiet space. Keep your voice down even if the school-holiday crowd is loud in the courtyard.
Singapore citizens and permanent residents enter free with NRIC. Tourists pay $9 for a standard adult ticket, $7 concession for seniors 60 and above, students and special-access visitors, and children six and under are free. A family package of five (maximum three adults) is $27, sold at the counter. Only cashless payments. A $2 discount applies if you show a National Museum or Reflections at Bukit Chandu stub dated within three months.
How to get here from the airport and the village
The museum is at 1000 Upper Changi Road North, a short drive inland from Changi Village and a longer hop from the passenger terminals. There is no MRT at the door. From Upper Changi station (DT34), take bus 2 from Upper Changi Station / Opposite SUTD (96041), ride seven stops, and alight at Opposite Changi Chapel Museum (97201). Buses 2 and 29 also stop at Changi Chapel Museum (97209). Bus 5 from the Changi Women's Prison stops is a 10-minute walk.
Paid parking is limited: cars $1.20 an hour from 6am to 5.59pm, capped at $12 a day, then $3 per entry overnight. Motorcycles are $0.65 per entry. The 10-minute grace period is for pick-up only. On 11 September HeritageSG is already warning that lots will be scarce, so do not plan a car-based visit that afternoon.
If you are already airside or at Jewel, this is a half-day add-on after you clear immigration, not a terminal attraction. Combine it with Changi Village hawker food or a walk at Changi Beach rather than trying to squeeze it between flights.
